University of the Third Age for Lostwithiel
Friday 12th October 2012
On Wednesday October 10th over 30 people attended an open meeting hosted by Lostwithiel Town Forum to explore the possibility of setting up a University of the Third Age in the town.
University of the Third Age are self-help, self-managed lifelong learning co-operatives for older people no longer in full time work, providing opportunities for their members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups and to pursue learning not for qualifications, but for fun.
Lindsay Southgate, Vice Chair of the Town Forum said “ We were delighted with the response from local residents to this opportunity. We are fortunate to have many active interest groups already within the Town but it seems that there is a place for this too”.
A regional U3A representative attended the meeting to share their experiences and information about the organisation. At the end of the meeting a vote was taken by those who attended confirming that they wished for a U3A to be set up. A steering group was appointed which will now work to set up the organisation within Lostwithiel in the next couple of months.
The Forum are delighted to have been able to facilitate this meeting and wish the steering committee well with their new venture. The Lostwithiel U3A will publish details of new events on this website and also in next month's Lostwithiel newsletter.
