Oasis Youth Centre Current Position
Dear All
Many thanks for the huge support Oasis has received over the last few months. I have read Jill Jones latest letter and find once again that an incorrect statement has been made. Just to reiterate what has happened.
The LCA chose to suspend Oasis from a building provided by funding for the young people of Lostwithiel. It was an action considered unnecessary by people within the community and also by the young people of Lostwithiel.
The LCA detailed 10 different reasons but in a subsequent meeting with the LCA they listed 3 main reasons outlining that when these are sorted we can start running Oasis once again. These were met within days of being given this list. However, this wasn’t good enough for the LCA and they decided to add a further list of 17 reasons which we are currently working through.
As a volunteer as well I have had to take time out from running my business and therefore losing money, to complete courses, attend meetings, visit parents and various other tasks. All this was unnecessary as all the reasons given could have been fulfilled without having to suspend Oasis. When Jill Jones state she has the best interest of the young people at heart, I do not believe it. The committee of the LCA has always hampered Oasis’ development. We would like to open every Friday and Saturday night (the most important nights for young people) but we are not allowed to. The reason because we cannot unlock the centre.
I think it is now time to accept that the LCA are unable to manage Oasis let alone the LCA and I would call on the community to assist me in retrieving Oasis for the young people of Lostwithiel. It would be a simple matter of closing up a door, resetting alarms, and installing meters to monitor our electricity, water and gas consumptions. It would enable at least part of this community project to be managed by people who have the communities best interest at heart.
I will shortly arrange for a petition to be placed in various shops and would ask those who feel this an important issue to sign the position and call on the LCA to release the building into the care of the new management committee.
Many thanks
